4.01 The CIF seller, according to Lord Atkinson in Johnson v Taylor Bros & Co Ltd,1 has to do five things: make out an invoice for the goods; ship goods of the contractual description; procure a contract of carriage for delivery of the goods to the agreed destination; arrange for insurance of the goods on the terms current in the trade; and forward the shipping documents to the buyer with all reasonable dispatch.2 The seller may, however, be an intermediate trader in string trading conditions and not the original shipper.
