Oxford Legal Research Library and ICMA

What is the Oxford Legal Research Library?

The Oxford Legal Research Library (OLRL) is a product family containing a collection of digital law products, all available separately for subscription:

International Commercial Law (ICML)
International Commercial Arbitration (ICMA)
Financial and Banking Law (FBL)
Private International Law (PRIL)

What is International Commercial Arbitration?

International Commercial Arbitration (ICMA) is a product included in the Oxford Legal Research Library. It brings together some of the leading works in the field and provides an exceptional resource for arbitrators and researchers. For more information, please visit our About page.

How do I know if I have access to content?

Your access to content will depend on the subscription that you or your institution has purchased. Even though you may not have a subscription to all of the products in a product family, you can search and see results from content you are not subscribed to alongside content that you can access. ‘Protected’ results are indicated by a padlock icon or, in some cases, a line of text indicating that there are more results from a particular product. You can filter search results to view items with full-text access or filter to view the content that you don’t have access to.

If you want to access content that you do not have a subscription for, we suggest that you complete a Recommend to Your Librarian form.

Some of the titles are also included in one of OUP's other services; why is this?

Some of the titles in ICMA are also available through other OUP law services. This is because the areas of law covered by both services overlap, and the titles are relevant to users of both services. It is important that we include relevant titles to give all users the best possible access to content that will help them to fulfil their research needs, without requiring them to purchase additional subscriptions or search in two places.

This does not mean we will make you pay for content twice. Please contact your sales representative for further information regarding pricing and discounts for overlapping content.

How often is ICMA updated?

New content will be added to ICMA as new and relevant titles are published in print.

How accessible is ICMA and will my screen reader software work with it?

ICMA supports A and AA criteria of WCAG 2.0. and works with most popular screen-reading software. We have worked hard to ensure that all users have an equal level of access to the content in ICMA and are happy to answer any questions on this subject as well as receive comments on areas that could be improved.

Can I receive email alerts regarding news and updates to ICMA?

You can subscribe to an RSS feed from the Home Page which will deliver the latest information about new content.

Can I suggest content for inclusion in ICMA?

Yes - please contact us with details of the content that you would like to suggest. In order to add the necessary value to the content, our editorial processes mean that we cannot guarantee publication although we will endeavour to respond to suggestions as soon as possible.

On which browsers will ICMA display correctly?

ICMA is designed to display and function correctly on the following browsers or later:

• Firefox 8 and 9
• Safari 5
• Google Chrome 17 and 18
• IE8 and IE9

We recommend that you set your screen resolution to 1024x768 pixels for optimum display and use.

Access to your account

I have forgotten my username and password

Only account administrators can reset passwords. Please contact your librarian or administrator for help.

I am a subscriber and I can't access ICMA

If an error message has appeared above the login box on the ‘Log in’ screen this may give some suggestions about why you may not be able to access the site. This message may direct you to either your network administrator or to the contact us page.

Please see the list below for some possible reasons why you may be experiencing issues accessing ICMA and how to solve these issues.

a) You have not sent us your license agreement
Unless you are in a free trial period, we cannot give you access to the site until we have received and checked your signed license agreement.

b) You are attempting to log in with a password via the Personal Profile area of the site
Ensure you are entering your username and password into the login box on the left hand side of the screen, rather than the Personal Profile area.

c) Your registration details are incorrect on our database
Check with your librarian or account administrator and ask them to follow the instructions below to ensure that your IP address, username, and password are correct in our database. Log in to the site, select Subscriber Services, and then go to the appropriate 'Managing your account link' for your territory. There you can check that you are using the correct username and password or that the correct IP addresses have been entered for your institution. If the IP address needs to be corrected, please contact us with the correct address.

d) Your account may be on hold
Occasionally an account is put on hold if we have not received your subscription payment, or if your subscription or free trial has expired. You should receive notification if this is the case.

e) If your institution holds a concurrent user license, it may be that your browser is not configured to accept cookies
Cookies are required for subscribers in order to control access to the service. If you see a cookie-related error message when you try to log in, please enable cookies and try again.

After I enter my username/password and click on ‘log in’ and then try to search or use the indexes, I'm being bounced back to a blank log-in screen

It is possible that you are seeing an old page and need to alter your cache settings. To find out how to refresh your cache settings, please refer to the online help in your Browser.

Do you offer library card access to ICMA?

Yes, to access ICMA using your library card, please use the login on the Home Page.

Our institution connects to the internet using NAT – can we access ICMA?

Yes, our access control software will work fine with sites firewalled using NAT. In order to give you access, we just need to know which IP address ranges the NAT software is masquerading as. Please contact us if you would like to do this.

Users with off-site access to ICMA

We do not allow remote access unless it is by a secure route (e.g. Shibboleth, Athens), a referred URL access from an accessed-controlled page on the subscriber's website, or access via a VPN (Virtual Private Network). Please contact us for more information.

I've forgotten my site administrator password

Please contact us and specify whether you would like to be reminded of your password, or whether you would like to change it, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Can I distribute my site administrator username and password to allow access for colleagues?

No, this is a restricted ID which should be kept in a safe place for use only by the librarian or site administrator. As access to ICMA for institutions is IP authenticated, your colleagues will be able to access service without a username and password. If any of your colleagues require a username and password for off-site access to OLRL, please contact us.

Searching content

What are the different ways of searching within ICMA?

Can I work in an environment where all I can see is content from a single product within a product family?

It is possible to search and browse content within a single product by going to the product homepage (ICMA homepage) and conducting a quick search with the ‘This site’ radio button selected above the search box. When working in the product context your search (including advanced search) and browse results are automatically limited to content within that product only.

When working within the OLRL family environment you can also limit your results to those within a single product by using the Product filter in the left hand panel, or ticking the box at the top left of the search page to see only results from those subscribed products.

Why am I unable to order by relevance when browsing?

Relevance is applicable to search only, as relevance rating relates to the occurrences of a search term within a piece of content, relative to occurrences in other pieces of content. Any item chosen within a particular browse category has equal weighting, so the results are presented in A-Z order by default. All other available sort orders may be applied to browse results.

For some content I see [No title] in both the table of contents and some headings – what does this mean?

‘No Title’ is the default heading for a chunk of content that does not have a title in the printed book. There should be a limited number of these; they are generally introductory text or tables of content for appendices.

One of the cross-reference links in the text doesn't work

If a cross-reference link in the text isn't working, please contact us and we will try to fix the issue as soon as possible.

Printing and saving content

Can I print text from ICMA?

To print a page, use the Printer icon  in the Tools toolbar at the top of the page. A preview window will appear with the correctly formatted pages, including footnotes (where relevant), minus the site navigation components. Please note that the privacy policy and legal notice apply.

Can I save sections from the text to PDF from ICMA?

To generate a PDF, navigate to the page and click the PDF button  within the Tools toolbar. This can then be viewed on screen, printed, and saved for further use. Please note that the privacy policy and legal notice apply.

How much material can I legally print/save to PDF from ICMA?

You are restricted by copyright in the amount of information that you can print or download. It is very important that you read the privacy policy and legal notice before printing or downloading anything from ICMA.

I would like to reuse or reproduce excerpts from ICMA. Do I need to get permission?

Yes, in order to reuse, reproduce, digitize, or translate any excerpt, chapter, and image from ICMA, you need to fill out a permissions request form. Depending on your request, please select the appropriate link on the online form, and follow the instructions.

Resources for Librarians

Is ICMA OpenURL-compliant?

OLRL is compliant with version 0.1 of the OpenURL specification. To enable this feature in your institution, please access your account information in Subscriber Services. OLRL also supports custom OpenURL resolver icons specific to your institution.

Also note that OLRL is integrated with Ex Libris' SFX Knowledge Base, ensuring that the site operates as both a source and target for OpenURL.

Does ICMA provide MARC records for subscribing institutions?

Machine Readable Cataloguing records (MARC21 Records) are available for library professionals to download free of charge. Our records are NACO, SACO, and AACR2 compliant.

Click on the appropriate link on our Subscriber Services page to download a MARC21 format file (.mrc) containing records of titles published in OLRL. Please note that you will require MARC record reader/editing software (such as MARC Edit) to load these files to your library system.

Please note that MARC records are available for book titles published in online law products only.

How are the ICMA usage reports defined?

Oxford University Press provides usage statistics that are compliant with the COUNTER Code of Practice, Release 5. These reports are designed to be clear, flexible, and consistent. For more information and to access reports for your institution, please see our Usage Statistics page for librarians.

Can I see usage statistics for my library/institution?

COUNTER-compliant usage statistics are available to account administrators. To see your institution's usage statistics, follow the appropriate link in our Subscriber Services area (you'll need to use your administrator username and password). COUNTER statistics are made available approximately 2 weeks after the end of the month.

What is your policy on third party data mining?

Oxford University Press recognizes the research benefit of Text and Data Mining (TDM) across a variety of research fields. As such, we are happy to accommodate TDM for non-commercial use. If you have any questions please e-mail Data.Mining@oup.com

Does ICMA support meta search software?

Yes; the site can currently be accessed by meta search software via HTTP request and supports the method="get" using a base URL as follows:

What content can Google, and other search engines, crawl from ICMA?

Google can crawl all the “public” pages in ICMA (for example, News, About and Legal Information). All content within ICMA will appear within Google search results (and other search engines).

What is your policy on cookies?

Cookies are required to control access to the service. The default policy will be to use cookies for authentication. Subscribers who have unlimited access licences for ICMA may choose to disable cookies and will still be able to use the service, but usage statistics related to user sessions will not be available.

Proxy servers

Will our proxy server IP address(es) be enough to allow access to ICMA?

Yes. However, if you are accessing ICMA through a proxy server you need to register the IP address of the proxy server with us in order for you to access the ICMA site.

I've registered my proxy server IP address(es), but I can't access ICMA.

If you are shown as not logged in and have no access to full-text content then the IP address of your proxy server is not being recognised by the ICMA site. If this is the case, please contact us, giving us details of the problem.

After previously successful IP-authenticated access via a proxy server, why am I now being requested to sign in with a username and password?

We recommend that you contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to check whether they have changed their configuration in a way that might hinder your IP-authenticated access to the ICMA site.

IP addresses

I've tried to set up IP-authenticated access to ICMA without success

If for some reason you are unable to access ICMA by IP address authentication, referring URL access may be possible. Please contact us to enquire about further possibilities for your institution.

How do I register a large number of IP addresses or change my institution's existing IP addresses?

Contact the office appropriate to your region with the list of IP addresses:

North and South America: oxfordonline@oup.com
Rest of the world: onlinesubscriptions@oup.com

Tip: remember to use the asterisk (*) wildcard character if you are registering an entire class of IP address, and condense IP ranges in the following way, e.g. nnn.nnn.1-30.*

Subscriber Services

How do I update my institution's subscription record?

To view your subscription details log in to the Subscriber Services site appropriate to your region.

Alternatively you can e-mail the office appropriate to your region giving details of what you would like us to change and we will contact you as soon as we have implemented the changes:

How do I use Subscriber Services?

Subscriber Services are only available to subscribers of ICMA who are logged in to the site as administrators. Once on the Subscriber Services page, you will be required to enter your administrator username and password in order to access the following services:

• View subscription information and IP addresses
• View your institutional usage reports
