3.01 Initially Belgium assumed the arbitration provisions of the 1806 French Code de procédure civile‎. In 1876 and 1958 attempts to amend the Belgian arbitration law failed.1 It was not until 1972 that a more modern arbitration statute was adopted. 3.02 The present arbitration law is based upon a statute of 4 July 1972.2 In fact, this statute incorporates the Uniform Law on Arbitration, which was contained in a Council of Europe Convention of 20 January 1966.3 This Convention, which aimed to introduce a uniform arbitration law in Europe, had, however, failed: it...
