A lack of impartiality or independence in an arbitrator is not the only contingency that a set of arbitral rules must anticipate. Such rules must also anticipate an arbitrator's resignation, death, or failure to perform, and the consequences that follow upon any of these events. Articles 13 and 14 of the UNCITRAL Rules address these questions and are the subject of this Chapter.
