This chapter explains Article 7 of the Rome I Regulation, which contains ‘special rules on insurance contracts’. These rules are of great importance for the European insurance industry, the world's largest with a 33% share of the global market. Article 7 can only be properly understood against the background of the prior conflict rules that will continue to apply to insurance contracts concluded before 17 December 2009 and will still influence the operation of Article 7 in several key respects. The background and legislative development of Article 7 are discussed.
