2 Treaty Interpretation: History and Background

2.01 The purpose of Chapter 2 is to survey the history of treaty interpretation, to discuss the development of the Convention Rules and describe how they are currently accepted as rules of customary international law. This background information will facilitate a deeper understanding of the examination of the Convention Rules set out in the remaining chapters of this book.
